Wanting another hydra, but not wanting to pay "real hydra" prices, I purchased <a href="http://ironwindmetals.com/store/product_info.php?products_id=7988">http://ironwindmetals.com/store/product_info.php?products_id=7988</a> to see if it'd work. After all, its a 25mm item!<br />
<br />
Well...hmm. It's a bit small :P<br />

<br />
I love cards. I rarely play poker-style games, but I collect decks of cards anyway.<br />
<br />
I love the <a href="https://www.kickstarter.com/profile/cardicians" target="_blank">Cardicians</a> (NOT the Kardashians!) and <a href="https://www.kickstarter.com/profile/thirdwayind" target="_blank">Thirdway Industries</a> for cards...and so I want to have some flourishes ready for when I actually use them! Not tricks, per se, but ways of handling decks of cards that are fun. I did love walking around my dorm with a deck of cards that I constantly shuffled, back when I was in school...<br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nyvWgIU95Pc" target="_blank">The Swing Cut</a><br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FZOi58AjvgQ" target="_blank">The Swivel Cut</a><br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S4ES5K7CM-c" target="_blank">The Charlier Cut</a> - one I don't tend to use cause I have small hands :)<br />
<br />
Disturb Reality also have some other fun videos worth perusing.<br />
<br />
A <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5QBueN9UNfw&list=PLYlPrxtF5YHE03cfXUEEluf7793fi9LgN" target="_blank">GIANT playlist</a> of card flourishes here!<br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=79FBoliI1ag" target="_blank">A one-handed shuffle? I want!</a><br />
<br />
Im never super excited about "First videos", but <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E-LVrkBEAvA" target="_blank">this kid</a> has a different take on some of the Disturb Reality tricks.<br />
<br />
DECK REVIEWS:<br />
As mentioned, I love custom decks. <a href="https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCtiqGfHpgxNWmlCUnIwXTmA" target="_blank">Scrambled Decks</a> has a whole channel devoted to such reviews.<br />
<br />
<u>Here is a recommend order to learn:</u><br />
<i>If you're just starting, just work on the basics: Charlier Cut, Revolution Cut, and Scissor Cut.<br />
<br />
Feel ambitious? Muse Cut, Teachwrap, Knacky Hackey Sackey</i> <br />
<i><br /></i>
<i><br /></i>
What to play with all the decks of custom cards I own? Tien-Len (13), of course!<br />

Apparently he does a Secret Santa exchange every year, and so I got in on this past event.<br />
<br />
It was run very smoothly, and while I kind of broke the rule that you were supposed to write what you'd like on your blog, I didnt...<br />
<br />
However, soon after the event began, I got a neat little package from <a href="http://www.midlamminiatures.co.uk/" target="_blank">http://www.midlamminiatures.co.uk/</a> who did a great job in disguising their origin (their shipping label even says, "A mysterious package arrived from the Stone Hills..."). Inside were 8 very cool minis, fantasy themed. 2 even had "winter clothing" on - someone picked up on my like of Frostgrave, for sure!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/nn100/Kealios/Frostgrave/20160102_0243221_zpscxiiayil.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/nn100/Kealios/Frostgrave/20160102_0243221_zpscxiiayil.jpg" height="225" width="400" /></a></div>
As I marveled at them, I noticed two things.<br />
1) they were small. You know, not tiny, but these were definitely 25mm, not 28mm or larger as most modern minis are wont to be<br />
2) they really reminded me of some old school goodness.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/nn100/Kealios/Frostgrave/20160102_0243111_zpsmvucqwgc.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/nn100/Kealios/Frostgrave/20160102_0243111_zpsmvucqwgc.jpg" height="225" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I do like knowing what I've got when it comes to miniatures. A lot of these I got decades ago as a youth being introduced to D&D. <a href="http://www.miniatures-workshop.com/lostminiswiki/index.php?title=Main_Page" target="_blank">http://www.miniatures-workshop.com/lostminiswiki/index.php?title=Main_Page</a> has been a trip down nostalgia lane for me as I identified many of my old fantasy collection. I mean, come on, how fun is it to see things like this:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.miniatures-workshop.com/lostminiswiki/images/5/54/RP-01-136.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://www.miniatures-workshop.com/lostminiswiki/images/5/54/RP-01-136.jpg" height="288" width="400" /></a></div>
Yes, I have those two minis :) They are Ral Partha "01-136<br />Chaotic Knights of Doom Legion" according to the site.<br />
<br />
Anyway, what struck me was the archer. I thought, "Man, I've seen him before!"...as in, like, recently! I pulled my own box of minis out, and sure enough, I had him already! The painted version is mine (and by "painted" I mean it has some primer and a dab of color...) and the lead version is what arrived:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/nn100/Kealios/Frostgrave/20160102_0242251_zpsbghz3ngd.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/nn100/Kealios/Frostgrave/20160102_0242251_zpsbghz3ngd.jpg" height="225" width="400" /></a></div>
They even have the same stamp on the bottom: "HP89 with "JO" below that. Mine is at LEAST 20 years old...which makes me really, REALLY curious - I have not yet identified him as per the Los Minis Wiki, but his entry at Midlam is <a href="http://www.midlamminiatures.co.uk/rangers/C1022F.html" target="_blank">http://www.midlamminiatures.co.uk/rangers/C1022F.html</a> (I also have, but didnt receive a duplicate of, his "twin", <a href="http://www.midlamminiatures.co.uk/rangers/C1022E.html" target="_blank">http://www.midlamminiatures.co.uk/rangers/C1022E.html</a>). [EDIT - I lied. <a href="http://www.miniatures-workshop.com/lostminiswiki/index.php?title=C1022_Druids_and_Rangers_%28Metal_Magic%29" target="_blank">http://www.miniatures-workshop.com/lostminiswiki/index.php?title=C1022_Druids_and_Rangers_%28Metal_Magic%29</a> has them listed as originally belonging to Hobby Products, with the sculptor being Josef Ochmann, circa 1989. Such fun to be a detective!<br />
<br />
Anyway, I want to spread the word. If you like old school minis, the kind we used to buy as a kid, well, Midlam Miniatures seems to have some oldies but goodies.<br />
<br />

<br />
Very simply:<br />
"How do you go about with terrain for Warmaster?" He was asking about sizes and terrain templates/area terrain, basically.<br />
<br />
My response:<br />
"I play a lot of 6mm, and only Warmaster in 10mm. For me, it made no
sense to buy 10mm terrain, so i continue to invest heavily in 6mm
terrain."<br />
<br />
But the response I wanted to preserve for eternity was that of <a href="http://www.forum.specialist-arms.com/index.php?topic=7945.msg65613#msg65613" target="_blank">Gorrin of London</a>:<br />
<br />
<span style="color: #6fa8dc;">"Returning to the OP, and to give the two-cents'-worth of input from a
(very) seasoned, middle-aged grand scale gamer (newbie to warmaster -
but experienced in 2mm, 6mm and 10mm in other rulesets)...well here
goes...<br /><br />I would suggest for inspiration on some "diorama" type
boards you google images search for grand scale terrain master "Bruce
Weigle". His late 19th century boards are designed for the (small even
for 6mm) Heriocs and Ros range but are a great reference for any scale
up to 10-12mm. I believe he makes his buildings at around 60-70% of the
scale of the figures to give the grand scale impression. I think that's
about right. Scaling for 10mm I'd say that 6mm is about right, and that
10mm scenery is better suited to 15mm games. I agree with Kealios that
owning a lot of 6mm and then investing in another bunch of scenery in a
scale slightly larger (remember that most 6mm models are 6mm "foot to
eye" and that most WM models - especially the infantry - are on the
small side of 10mm) is fairly pointless. Total Battle Miniatures 6-7mm
Pike and Shotte range is very "oldhammer" in style and the large range
can be supplemented further with some of the Napoleonic range - the
Napoleon in Russia range fulfilling much of my Kislevite needs.<br /><br />When
asked about the demise of Warhammer and "massed fantasy combat"
(writing for his regular column in Wargames, Soldiers and Strategy
magazine) Rick Priestley replied: "Massed combat? WFB is a 1:1 game with
a skewed groundscale! 120 dwarfs versus 150 orcs isn't massed
combat...it's a punch-up in a pub car-park!". I think that how we think
about scenery in WM game is a throwback to 1:1 games (WFB is what I'd
refer to as "large skirmish") where we are more comfortable with
buildings being roughly the same scale as the models, if you want to
think of your 30 WM orcs representing 30 orcs and 1 building
representing one building in WM then do so by all means...but I don't
understand why in those circumstances you wouldn't just play Warhammer
with a bit of command and control thrown in.<br /><br />By its very nature
WM is a grand scale game representing massed combat with an emphasis on
command and control and which largely plays down the differences in
races emphasised in WFB. To play any game at grand scale requires you to
immediately get your head around the abstraction of what the
battlefield and the models represent. I think from Rick Priestley's
original introduction to the game he specifically references that a
3-base regiment represents around six-hundred troops with a five
frontage and 720 for those with six. Those of you with large armies,
represent this for spectacle sake on your table. It will take twenty
full regiments and sixty stands, two deep and thirty across to represent
a single regiment in a four-deep line formation in 1:1 scale. They will
take up a 1.2 metre frontage on your table. That is what your single
3-stand unit represents. Place a single 10mm scale cottage in front of
them, how many of those 600 troops are shielded by that cottage? The
regiment can no more claim a "cover" bonus or restricted LOS from that
building than you could take shelter from a musket volley by hiding
behind a tennis ball.<br /><br />The truth is that in grand scale games,
most of your scenery is just that...scenery - and therefore just there
for show. It may sound counter-intuitive, but if you want to represent a
farm-house and a barn on a grand scale battlefield - it should not
really have any bearing on movement, shooting or LOS. A regiment would
not be able to shelter behind nor would they be able to hide behind
these buildings which compared to the footprint of the regiment would be
absolutely tiny. Likewise the regiment should be able to move through
the terrain feature without any penalty with the represented troops
affected by the building - maybe around five percent of them - simply
running to catch up with their comrades if they were slowed. Any set of
buildings whose real-to-scale size could not be imagined to be able to
fully obscure at least 200 troops (1 stand's worth) can be ignored. I
take a stand in line formation to be in real scale terms to be 4 ranks
deep so in dwarf terms that's 60 abreast (45 metres?), any obstruction
that I don't think is big enough to cover this size of frontage I ignore
as terrain feature.<br /><br />What is important in grand scale games is
agreeing what terrain features ARE important and agreeing on them battle
to battle. In my experience the things you need to represent are:<br /><br />Built
up areas - an area containing more than two or three houses from a
large hamlet, to villages, towns and parts of cities. The outskirts of
the built up areas should be clearly delimited (say with brown cloth and
buildings placed on them. The buildings themselves are individually
irrelevant (unless specifically required to be relevant such as a temple
etc) and the entire built up area should be treated as dense woods.
Main roads can exist through the built up area if the players wish but
units, must traverse them in column formation only (think I've see rules
for these in WM somewhere - something like all sides of a column count
as flanks and/or rear).<br /><br />Woods and forest - as above, but with trees instead of buildings of course (!)<br /><br />Specific areas of difficult ground - marshes, muddy ploughed fields (such as at Agincourt)<br /><br />Specific
defendable obstacles - walls, ridgelines, sunken roads, earthowrks etc.
In these instances I am taking about specific and important defendable
battlefield positions only. For example, the stone wall at
Fredricksberg, the walls of Hougamont at Waterloo, the sunken road at
Antietam, the Pratzen Heights at Austerlitz.<br /><br />Everything else
should have little if no effect, most hedges, gentle slopes (although
these may not provide a defendable bonus they may obstruct LOS), thin
treelines, small sections of wall, individual buildings or those deemed
not to represent "built up areas" as defined above.<br /><br />Sorry about
the epic post! I've probably previously bored all concerned with my ACW
terrain but I will try to take some pictures with WM figures to give you
an idea - you'll just have to forgive the obviously ACW buildings as I
don't have any WM 6mm buildings painted up!!<br /><br />So for me...I prefer
6mm for 10mm games. Not least because I ignore most buildings the
bigger they are the more they get in the way! And also...the 6mm range
is massive compared to the 10mm ranges. Irregular miniatures even do a
set of metal roofs, doors and windows with pegs you can just push into
balsa to make your own. Of course scratch building buildings at this
scale in very easy as well compared to 28mm.<br />2-cents worth...I've spewed out a fool's fortune!!"</span><br />

I irdered some more stuff from Leven again...and inquired as to whether he had anything for a Blacksmith.<br />

I could have sworn I wrote about this, but damned if I could find it. Anyway...he was working on an item, and ended up sending me the very first sample...I was so excited!<br />

I know - I HATE blurry pictures too, but I just have my phone. I tried making a glowing forge, so I started with reds and oranges, put black over, drybrushed a grey over for coals, and then used the yellow ink to make a glowing effect. Effective? I doubt it, but it's the effort that counts :)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/nn100/Kealios/My%20terrain/6mm%20Buildings/Blacksmith%204_zps66gav4he.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/nn100/Kealios/My%20terrain/6mm%20Buildings/Blacksmith%204_zps66gav4he.jpg" height="180" width="320" /></a></div>
Lastly, many of Leven's buildings have huge blank spots where openings are. I understand why, but just painting them black doesnt seem right to me. I tried a really limited "3D effect", using basic 3 point perspective.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
I've been playing a bit of Frostgrave lately, and <a href="http://www.lead-adventure.de/index.php?topic=82908.0" target="_blank">this thread on Lead Adventure</a> gave me a fun idea for my own objective markers.<br />
<br />
I ran down to Michael's and picked up some essentials. My wife already had fine gold glitter. <br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/nn100/Kealios/My%20terrain/Objectives/Objective%20tokens%20glitter_zpss5je19kf.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/nn100/Kealios/My%20terrain/Objectives/Objective%20tokens%20glitter_zpss5je19kf.jpg" height="180" width="320" /> </a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
These "gems" came in so many colors, I couldnt help it. That, and they were on sale. You'll notice most are "Qty 120." One was 150, and one was 200. I wish the others were all on the "150" side, but they still work fine.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/nn100/Kealios/My%20terrain/Objectives/Objective%20tokens%20gems_zpscdevhrbb.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/nn100/Kealios/My%20terrain/Objectives/Objective%20tokens%20gems_zpscdevhrbb.jpg" height="180" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Here you can see the finished results. I say "finished", but I realize that I haven't yet brushed them off, so some glitter appears to be on top of some of the items - it really isnt.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/nn100/Kealios/My%20terrain/Objectives/Objective%20tokens%201_zpsclt3kkkw.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;">s<img border="0" src="http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/nn100/Kealios/My%20terrain/Objectives/Objective%20tokens%201_zpsclt3kkkw.jpg" height="180" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/nn100/Kealios/My%20terrain/Objectives/Objective%20tokens%202_zpshtlnjosc.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/nn100/Kealios/My%20terrain/Objectives/Objective%20tokens%202_zpshtlnjosc.jpg" height="180" width="320" /></a></div>

It has an Epic Armageddon-feel for the rules and a build-your-own mechanic that is along the lines of what I love.<br />

I have done this countless other times, but this time I found a game that struck very near and dear to me:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://cf.geekdo-images.com/images/pic243265_md.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://cf.geekdo-images.com/images/pic243265_md.jpg" width="227" /></a></div>
I played <a href="https://boardgamegeek.com/image/243265/gladiator" target="_blank">Gladiator by Avalon Hill</a> so much as a teenager! Seeing it on the shelf brought up the inevitable, and based on Aron's recommendation, I began watching Spartacus on Netflix. And yes, by the end of Season 2, I was looking up gladiatorial games. Who, me?<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj3VpHFSuOM8X4UVtFosXWxHMhO2YVgPiWK2eaCnis1hMT570MWDVK_kQCck7E2uNPKj3FHX_3CbZO8qGmEuo-FCdATvmaWfJ5RVpXVLQuR-AMOcd0NkH_06Ey1Bwp330jXAj-gXcFne30/s1600/tumblr_ma1hihjnPT1qbjuneo1_500.gif" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="179" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj3VpHFSuOM8X4UVtFosXWxHMhO2YVgPiWK2eaCnis1hMT570MWDVK_kQCck7E2uNPKj3FHX_3CbZO8qGmEuo-FCdATvmaWfJ5RVpXVLQuR-AMOcd0NkH_06Ey1Bwp330jXAj-gXcFne30/s1600/tumblr_ma1hihjnPT1qbjuneo1_500.gif" width="320" /></a></div>
<a href="https://boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/43179/roman-gladiators" target="_blank">https://boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/43179/roman-gladiators</a> was a list that got me started. Browsing the list over and over, I liked what I read, but without playing a game, how can you really ever be sure?<br />
<br />
I started to develop some titles that I was leaning towards. I wanted something that allowed for variety between fighter types (before Spartacus, I hadnt really paid attention to the differences between Murmillo and Thraex, for example), focused primarily on 1v1 combat with a campaign system/opportunity to advance, and wasn't cumbersome (ie a little bit of how Gladiator was).<br />
<br />
<span style="color: yellow;"><b>RULES</b></span><br />
<a href="http://theminiaturespage.com/boards/msg.mv?id=146231" target="_blank">http://theminiaturespage.com/boards/msg.mv?id=146231</a> was another thread that really got me directed towards two rulesets in particular. After reading these two threads over and over, I have settled on these:<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.wargamevault.com/product/80461/Arena-Games-Gladiatorial-Combat?src=also_purchased&site=&manufacturers_id=3222" target="_blank">Arena Games</a> - Freeform gladiator design, but it seems like it allows differences based on your actual model used.<br />
<a href="http://www.blackhat.co.uk/online_shop/product_info.php?cPath=131&products_id=1484&osCsid=tl2mqj4fmi1te6ue0d35ntobo1" target="_blank">Morituri Te Salutant</a><span id="goog_859410703"></span> with their <a href="http://blackhat.co.uk/downloads.php" target="_blank">Downloads</a> section<br />
<br />
Freebies:<br />
<a href="http://Munera Sine Missione" target="_blank">Munera Sine Missione</a><br />
<a href="http://web.archive.org/web/20071120150536/http://www.dragonrune.com/DRHome/arena.html" target="_blank">Dragonrune: Arena of Death</a> which is MSM but a Fantasy variant.<br />
<br />
Of course, the Grandaddy of them all appears to be <a href="http://www.lead-adventure.de/index.php?topic=51608.0" target="_blank">Blood on the Sands</a>, still in development. I'll keep an eye on it as it progresses.<br />
<br />
<span style="color: yellow;"><b>RESEARCH</b></span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi6x1zhE_bOIcytOhWyZkED9xkS9R-DZrbl4XjYpognoqxSWzwlaZmtya2AYsIy-SjHeOoG7jc9oCOmFQOot8kJaIj4EoG8mY7HVWVvxusCKnWME2iICOTJ7arY7T3Q0iUgp4cEFAZSe1g/s1600/jttht2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="223" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi6x1zhE_bOIcytOhWyZkED9xkS9R-DZrbl4XjYpognoqxSWzwlaZmtya2AYsIy-SjHeOoG7jc9oCOmFQOot8kJaIj4EoG8mY7HVWVvxusCKnWME2iICOTJ7arY7T3Q0iUgp4cEFAZSe1g/s1600/jttht2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<span style="color: yellow;"><b> </b></span> <br />
With any learning comes research. <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Roman_gladiator_types" target="_blank">This article</a> got me going while I watched Spartacus, and I have:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<span style="color: yellow;"><b>MINIATURES</b></span><br />
As far as miniatures go, yea, there are a ton in 28mm.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.wargamesfoundry.com/ancients/gladiators/" target="_blank">http://www.wargamesfoundry.com/ancients/gladiators/</a> seem to get the best press. My only uneducated problem with these superb sculpts are that some seem to not be "real" by what I've read. Murmillo should have rectangular shields from what I can tell, and Hoplomachus should have spears, not just short swords. (the original link to the BGG list confirms my suspicions). Bah, whatever, I'll buy a ton :) and YES, they look the best of all that I have seen.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c334/pappa_midnight/Scaevaampgladiatrix_zps0e602e96.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c334/pappa_midnight/Scaevaampgladiatrix_zps0e602e96.jpg" height="221" width="320" /></a></div>
These two are from this excellent thread and are from Foundry: <a href="http://www.lead-adventure.de/index.php?topic=61911.0" target="_blank">http://www.lead-adventure.de/index.php?topic=61911.0</a><br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.crusaderminiatures.com/list.php?cat=1&sub=27&page=1" target="_blank">Crusader</a> has an excellent line as well, though the look to be 28mm. They are reputed to be the most historically accurate, though they tend to be a bit beefy and not refined enough for my taste. I'll likely get some, but for a game that focuses on ONE model at a time, well, 28mm is rumored to be the "One True Scale" for detail. I just dont see that here.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.oldgloryminiatures.com/products.asp?cat=45" target="_blank">Old Glory</a> also has some minis... they actually look pretty nice and dynamic!<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.thewargameswebsite.com/gladiators-from-moonraker/" target="_blank">Michael Stockin at TWW</a> pointed me towards these beauties by <a href="http://moonrakerminiatures.com/gladiators.htm" target="_blank">Moonraker</a>. <br />
<br />
<a href="http://stevebarbermodels.com/html/25mmgladiators.html" target="_blank">Steve Barber</a> has a KILLER arena and decent gladiators in 25mm (none that I plan on getting).<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://stevebarbermodels.com/images/wholeamp1.GIF" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://stevebarbermodels.com/images/wholeamp1.GIF" height="232" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<a href="http://brigadegames.3dcartstores.com/Gladiators_c_483.html" target="_blank">Brigade Games</a> has some historical poses. I especially like their Thraex and Hoplomachus.<br />
<br />
Black Hat, maker of Morituri Te Salutant, have their line up <a href="http://www.blackhat.co.uk/online_shop/index.php?cPath=23_94&osCsid=tl2mqj4fmi1te6ue0d35ntobo1" target="_blank">here</a>. I am not impressed but something usable may come from this line. <br />
<br />
So, now that I've got all that out of the way, I'll post my winners for the different Gladiator types here, and this shall begin my shopping list. Alphabetical list, with desriptions from the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Roman_gladiator_types" target="_blank">wiki</a>:<br />
<br />
<b>Dimachaerus</b> - The <i><a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dimachaerus" title="Dimachaerus">dimachaerus</a></i> (Greek διμάχαιρος, "bearing two knives") used a sword in each hand. [I'd like a minimum of 2]<br />

<span style="color: cyan;">The unpainted Dimachaerus in the top right is nice. This is Crusaders ANG006</span><br />
<br />
<b>Hoplomachus</b> - The <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hoplomachus" title="Hoplomachus">Hoplomachus</a>
(Greek "armed fighter") wore quilted, trouser-like leg wrappings,
loincloth, a belt, a pair of long shin-guards or greaves, an arm guard
(manica) on the sword-arm, and a brimmed helmet that could be adorned
with a plume of feathers on top and a single feather on each side. He
was equipped with a gladius and a very small, round shield. He also
carried a spear, which the gladiator would have to cast before closing
for hand-to-hand combat. [I'd like a minimum of 2]<br />

<span style="color: cyan;">This is the Brigade Games hoplomachus - I'm making a wild assumption that the purchased item comes with a spear!</span><br />
<b>Gauls</b> - see Thraex, who "were introduced as replacements for the Gauls after Gaul made peace with Rome." <br />
<br />
<b>Gladiatrix</b> - A female gladiator of any type. Also had to fight lions and bears by themselves. [I'll get one or two, most likely just for looks!]<br />
<br />
<b>Laquearius</b> - The <i><a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laquearius" title="Laquearius">laquearius</a></i> was a kind of <i>retiarius</i> who tried to catch his adversaries with a <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lasso" title="Lasso">lasso</a> (<i>laqueus</i>) instead of a net. He was equipped also with a dagger for use once he snared his opponent. [1, for originality's sake]<br />
<span style="color: cyan;">See the Foundry entry under Retiarius.</span> <br />
<br />
<b>Murmillo</b> - The <i><a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Murmillo" title="Murmillo">murmillo</a></i> (plural <i>murmillones</i>) or <i>myrmillo</i> wore a helmet with a stylised fish on the crest (the <i>mormylos</i> or sea fish), as well as an arm guard (<i>manica</i>),
a loincloth and belt, a gaiter on his right leg, thick wrappings
covering the tops of his feet, and a very short greave with an
indentation for the padding at the top of the feet. They are heavily
armoured gladiators: the <i>murmillo</i> carried a <i><a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gladius" title="Gladius">gladius</a></i> (64–81 cm long) and a tall, oblong shield in the legionary style. [I'd like a minimum of 3]<br />

<br />
<b>Provacator</b> - In the late Republican and early Imperial era, the armament of a <i>provocator</i> ("challenger") mirrored <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roman_legion" title="Roman legion">legionary</a>
armature. In the later Imperial period, their armament ceased to
reflect its military origins, and changes in armament followed changes
in arena fashion only. <i>Provocatores</i> have been shown wearing a loincloth, a belt, a long greave on the left leg, a <i>manica</i>
on the lower right arm, and a visored helmet without brim or crest, but
with a feather on each side. They were the only gladiators protected by
a breastplate (<i>cardiophylax</i>) which is usually rectangular, later often crescent-shaped. They fought with a tall, rectangular shield and the <i>gladius</i>. [minimum of 1]<br />

<b>Retiarius</b> - The <i><a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Retiarius" title="Retiarius">retiarius</a></i> ("net fighter") developed in the early <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Augustus" title="Augustus">Augustan</a> period. He carried a <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trident" title="Trident">trident</a> and a net. The <i>retiarius</i> wore a loincloth held in place by a wide belt and a larger arm guard (<i>manica</i>)
extending to the shoulder and left side of the chest. He fought without
the protection of a helmet. Occasionally a metal shoulder shield (<i>galerus</i>) was added to protect the neck and lower face. [Miminum of 2]<br />

<br />
<b>Samnite</b> - an older style, it seems: The Samnite was an early type of heavily armed fighter that disappeared in the early imperial period. A "Samnite" gladiator was armed with a long rectangular shield (<i>scutum</i>), a plumed helmet, a short sword, and probably a greave on his left leg.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.wargamesfoundry.com/files/9814/2838/1167/GLAD011.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://www.wargamesfoundry.com/files/9814/2838/1167/GLAD011.png" height="102" width="320" /></a></div>

<b>Secutor</b> - The <i><a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Secutor" title="Secutor">secutor</a></i> ("pursuer") developed to fight the <i><a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Retiarius" title="Retiarius">retiarius</a></i>. As a variant of the <i>murmillo</i>, he wore the same armour and weapons, including the tall rectangular shield and the <i><a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gladius" title="Gladius">gladius</a></i>. The helmet of the <i>secutor</i>,
however, covered the entire face with the exception of two small
eye-holes in order to protect his face from the thin prongs of the
trident of his opponent. The helmet was also round and smooth so that
the <i>retiarius</i> net could not get a grip on it. [minimum of 2]<br />

on the protome or front of the crest (the griffin was the companion of
the avenging goddess Nemesis), a small round or square-shaped shield (<i>parmula</i>), and two thigh-length greaves. His weapon was the Thracian curved sword (<i><a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sica" title="Sica">sica</a></i> or <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Falx" title="Falx">falx</a>, c. 34 cm or 13 in long).<br />

I love rulesets more than most, I suspect, because I love to read and edit - it's just what I do. But mostly, I love to see how different people introduce similar concepts (really, how many ways are there to describe how to measure range, for example?).<br />
<br />
I also like shiny things, and next-gen rulesets are often that. Unless your company has the initials "GW" in it, it is usually assumed that the latest edition of a set of rules improves upon its predecessors - not always, but usually. I believe this is the case with Warmaster, Warmaster Ancients, and now Hail Caesar.<br />
<br />
There are quite a few reviews out there for Hail Caesar. Among them, I found:<br />
<br />
<a href="https://meeples.wordpress.com/reviews/rules-reviews/ancients/hail-caesar-review/" target="_blank">https://meeples.wordpress.com/reviews/rules-reviews/ancients/hail-caesar-review/</a><br />

<br />
The thread I started on the Specialist Arms forum is a good one, too, I think:<br />
<a href="http://www.forum.specialist-arms.com/index.php?topic=7300.0" target="_blank">http://www.forum.specialist-arms.com/index.php?topic=7300.0</a><br />
<br />
First, let me link this here - the whole reason I bought Hail Caesar was because I caught wind of <a href="http://adyswargamesden.com/2015/07/shadow-storm-aka-hail-caesar-fantasy-pdf/" target="_blank">Ady's Fantasy mod for HC</a>. I have since joined the Hail Caesar Fantasy Yahoo group, but Ady's work will be my foundation, I believe.<br />
<br />
I want to make some of my own detailed notes about the differences and similarities between Warmaster and Hail Caesar, mostly because I am really interested in playing HC (up til now, I've only been reading and digesting the book over and over).<br />
<br />
Hail Caesar has been called "Warmaster with less dice". Other differences as noted on <a href="https://boardgamegeek.com/thread/659828/difference-between-hail-caesar-and-warmaster-ancie" target="_blank">https://boardgamegeek.com/thread/659828/difference-between-hail-caesar-and-warmaster-ancie</a>:<br />
<span style="color: #d5a6bd;">Each unit is given one order, how well you succeed determines how many moves the unit can make.<br />A unit doesn't loose stands, only reduces in effectiveness.<br />You roll far less dice in a HC combat.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="color: #d5a6bd;"> 1. In WMA, most units consist of three stands. Units in HC come in
varying sizes: standard, large, small, and tiny. Unit frontage is a key
factor, and most units are at least two ranks deep. <i>While there are different unit sizes - only small and regular make much
sense in game. Tiny are really only for scenario specific stuff, and
large seem to get very little benefit for their increase in footprint.
Frontage is what matters, depth is not really very important. </i><br /><br />2. There is a wider range of troop types available in HC. There is also a much greater variety of possible unit formations. <i>Not sure there are really that much difference in number of troop types.
Also while HC has several prescribed formations - in WM you can arrange
your formation as you wish.</i><br /><br />3.
In WMA, each unit may be given up to three commands per turn, with each
command and die roll being made in succession. In HC, the unit's orders
must be stated out loud, then a die roll determines whether the unit
can make zero, one, two, or three moves to complete its orders. Move
distances are also a bit smaller in HC. <i>Move distances are smaller in HC? Light Cavalry can move huge distances in HC</i><br /><br />4. In WMA, each unit has a
single Attack value. In HC, each unit has two separate values for
ranged combat (Short and Long), and two separate values for hand-to-hand
combat (initial Clash and Sustained fighting).<i> Clash / Sustained is only different for Cavalry - and this is good - it
makes cavalry good on the charge, less good after round 1.</i><br /><br />5. There is no
Armour Save in HC, although the Morale Save serves a similar function.
In HC, each unit also has a Stamina value - if a unit takes more hits
than this value, it becomes Shaken and suffers various penalties. Under
certain circumstances, units being attacked in ranged or hand-to-hand
combat also must take a Break test to see if they hold, give ground, or
break and run away. <i>Armour Save / Morale save - same thing, different name. The Break test
in HC is key - this is a 2d6 result that determines the result of a
combat. This can make or break the game for you. Its possible for a very
good unit to rout off the table after getting 1 wound from missile
fire. We house ruled that you rolled 3d6 for break tests, and kept the
best 2 dice. This helped stop some of the crazy fluctuations in results.
</i><br /><br />6. HC also includes a number of useful optional rules to add historical characteristics and flavor to various units. <i>Yes HC lists all the optional rules together - but WM just lists them with each army list - no real difference here.</i><br /><br />7.
In WMA, armies tend to be built to standard point values. HC is much
more oriented toward scenario play, with little emphasis on points-based
armies. The HC rulebook includes seven complete sample scenarios. <i>Points - while the core HC book had very little in the way of points,
there have been several army books since that are much more points
focused. </i></span><br />
<br />
<span style="color: #d5a6bd;">Things that seemed a bigger difference to me would include:<br />More streamlined combat - no more endless rounds of WM combat. <br />Simpler combat - no fiddling around with single stand removal, fall backs and follow-ups.<br />HC has longer combats between heavy infantry - these turn into long slugging matches not a knock out punch<br />HC Knights are much less strong than in WM (which is good)<br />Skirmishers work well in HC<br />HC proximity rule works fairly well to limit movement when close to enemy, but can be a bit fiddly, and can be exploited.<br /><br />Movement in HC is still pretty free an easy (like WM)<br />Light Infantry is very good </span><i><span style="color: #d5a6bd;"></span></i><br />
<i><br /></i>
The above was cut-and-paste from the thread I started, and it was what I focused on the most during my explorations. I have to say, however, that there are a few other things that seem to really make a difference to me as I read the HC rules.<br />
<br />
<b>Divisions</b> (formerly called brigades) - these are assigned before the game. A commander must be included in a division, and can only give orders to that division. The neat thing is, units must be within 6" of each other to receive a Division order - so they dont need to be touching.<br />
<br />
<b>Basing</b> - I plan on using my Warmaster armies for HC, and I plan on using them as-is - so my infantry will be 3 bases of 40m x 20mm, cavalry will be 3 stands based to the short edge, etc. If this proves unwieldy or unfair, I'll revisit it, but that is my plan for now. Note also that I plan on using measurements as-is, instead of converting to centimeters or halving ranges, as some have mentioned elsewhere.<br />
<br />
<b>Orders</b> - in Warmaster, you could easily have a situation like this: Your Ld 9 hero orders a unit forward. After his first move, now the unit is within 20cm of an enemy (-1), has a unit to its flank (-1), and is more than 20cm from the issuing hero (-1). Its second order (-1) will be at a 5-...ouch.<br />
<br />
HC seems to only have distance mods, but they're stretched out to 12" range bands instead of the 8"/20cm bands of WM. This means that orders will go off much more reliably than in WM, especially since only one roll is made to determine how many orders a unit may make (and many unit or formation types ignore this distance penalty!). In the above example, if, one the first Command roll, the roll was 8+, the unit would get one order. On a 6+, the unit would get 2 Orders, and on a 5+. the unit would get 3 Orders.This seems like such a better version!<br />
<br />
<span style="color: yellow;"><b>*NOTE*</b></span> This seems confirmed in the "Author's Notes" of Hail Caesar, even though this opinion is not shared by some on the Warlord Games forums (seen in <a href="http://www.warlordgames.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=29&t=21360&sid=e94bc487c0183ce9b19e3e7daa0d66c7&p=224991#p224991" target="_blank">THIS</a> thread) - <br />
<br />
Hail Caesar, p172, 2nd paragraph in right column:<br />"Modifiers to the command rolls have also been reduced to that for distance only."<br /><br />It is in the discussion of how HC differs from Black Powder, and includes discourse on the shortened movement rates, extended melee, and desire to keep HC as a less maneuverable, more "reliable" game of "slog forward and brawl". So this makes me feel confident that this is the right model for me...<br />
<br />
<b>Free Moves</b> - many units, including those in columns or with special traits, can make a free move after a failed order attempt. This can really prevent stagnation, I believe, and looks really good in theory. I havent analyzed the extent to which units have been given this <i>Drilled</i> special rule in Ady's conversions, but I approve.<br />
<br />
<b>Proximity Rule</b> - this looks to be the most fiddly rule that I can see. It will take some getting used to.<br />
<br />
<b>Disorder</b> - basically "Confused" from WM, seems to happen on a 4+ instead of a 6 in many cases.<br />
<br />
<b>Combat Modifiers</b> - HC seems to hand out dice modifiers instead of extra or less dice. Like the Elves with their +1 to hit in ranged, or a Defended unit being hit on 5+, these can really adjust the odds instead of the dice thrown. I am in the "More dice is better" camp, but that's because I love dice. I do NOT think the d6 is the ultimate randomizer, but it is what it is. The other day, I threw 17 dice on a charge and only got 4 hits - so more dice isnt always better! :)<br />
<br />
This isn't always the case, it seems. Ranged attacks do get Dice Mods.<br />
<br />
<b>Combat Results</b> - after combat is determined by the usual manner, the loser rolls <b>Break tests</b> - that is, they test on a chart (which has been mentioned above as being "bursty"). Giving Ground is automatically 6" back, and yes, victorious units can pursue.<br />
<br />
<b>Commanders</b> - Commanders can take wounds, I believe, and when "Wounded" they can no longer fight but still may issue orders. If for some reason a Commander is killed, the player gets a free replacement, at 1 less Leadership value than the dead commander. I think this is a good rule.<br />
<br />
<b>Summary</b> - there is a super 9-page cheat sheet at the end of the book that really encapsulates the rules into a nice chart. The more I read the rules, and refer back to the Summary, the more I am convinced that this will be a fantastic play.<br />
<br />
I may have some of these summaries wrong, but I've read and reread the rules and am really looking forward to getting this on the table. Hopefully I'll report once that actually happens!<br />
<br />
<b><span style="color: #ffd966;">*NOTE*</span></b><br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.warlordgames.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=29&t=21713" target="_blank">This thread</a> has a really great idea, posted by one of the Warlord Games moderators:<br />
<br />
Q: My initial plan was to do 40x20 for all units and maybe 20x20 for comand and such.<br />
If I go this route would say <span style="color: #e06666;">3 40x20's for large unit</span> <span style="color: #c27ba0;">2 40x20's for standard</span> and a <span style="color: #6aa84f;">single 40x20 for small </span>work out? You think formations would be an issue using the 40x20 bases or should I get some 20x20's also for certain formations?<br />
<br />
A: That would be the way I would do it. [For formations,] I would use a marker of some sort. For a column, I,would line all the
bases up short edge to short edge, just as you would a battle line, but
have a marker, like a coloured ring, to mark the head of the column.
Otherwise, use a series of folded card markers that state the formation.
Honestly, it won't really matter because most of your units will be in
line of battle for most of the time. Light units in open order will be
depicted by separating the bases slightly. Skirmishers might benefit
from being on smaller 20x20 bases to represent the "cloud" effect. Easy
to spot, they can't form into close order and as I said earlier, the
commanders on pennies stand out from them.<br />
<br />
<b>So...</b>This looks like an even better solution to my above-mentioned 3 bases...I'm really happy I found this! I'm quite obviously a train modeller in disguise, except I don't really give a damn about trains going round in circles :)<br />
<br />
<a href="http://theminiaturespage.com/boards/msg.mv?id=380837" target="_blank">http://theminiaturespage.com/boards/msg.mv?id=380837</a> is a thread I started on TMP asking for some advice. I wanted to replicate things like this into my landscape:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i793.photobucket.com/albums/yy216/Jurgen_Keuppe/6mm%20Layout/IMG_1471_zps82b9d472.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i793.photobucket.com/albums/yy216/Jurgen_Keuppe/6mm%20Layout/IMG_1471_zps82b9d472.jpg" height="297" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i793.photobucket.com/albums/yy216/Jurgen_Keuppe/6mm%20Layout/IMG_1470_zps107627f6.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i793.photobucket.com/albums/yy216/Jurgen_Keuppe/6mm%20Layout/IMG_1470_zps107627f6.jpg" height="297" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Busch makes something like this, but I havent found it in the US yet. <a href="http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0002OHBB0?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00" target="_blank">http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0002OHBB0?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00</a><br />
This was recommended in the above thread, and really kicked off my hunt. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I did eventually find this Faller product, and purchased two. I originally found it <a href="http://www.faller.de/App/WebObjects/XSeMIPS.woa/cms/page/pid.14.17.91/agid.1113/atid.2481/lg.en/ecm.at/PREMIUM-Landschafts-Segment-Wildgraswiese.html" target="_blank">here:</a><br />

They
were $14 USD each, and I added tracking since I wasn't sure about the
reseller, but everything arrived and they look amazing (albeit small,
6"x8"). Expensive but nice...I'll likely base one as is, and cut the other one up for small yards, etc in 6mm.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I finally got most of the product in and took some side-by-side shots of what I had found. The group shot (I sprinkled some US quarters about for size comparisons):</div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Of course, I didnt realize at the time, but Ziterdes is made in conjunction with Noch - and I wager I paid a bit more for the gaming application. Still, the Silflor product is as good as I could have hoped for. My only real complaint about the Silflor is the color - I would have liked it a bit more golden wheat colored, like the Ziterdes one, but alas, it'll do.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I am waiting on some 6mm stone walls to arrive from Leven Miniatures, after which I'll get some of these based up, but I am happy with what I see so far. The only California Gold fields I see like that Silflor one are in 6mm height...thats a bit tall, I think.</div>

We collect little things, play with little things, obsess with little things :)<br />
<br />
I love collecting small scale miniatures. The assembling and painting, well...it doesnt always happen, but I'll spend hours pouring over army lists and working on finding proxy models, etc. Once these armies have been ordered, they usually sit :( BUT I have them, and they'll be ready when I am.<br />
<br />
The frustrating part of this hobby is finding or getting into a game years after it's heyday has passed - in my case, Epic Armageddon and Warmaster come to mind. You'll find someone's post about the perfect model to proxy for something, but the company that makes that model disappeared years ago, or something along those lines.<br />
<br />
The closing announcement of Exodus Wars this week brought this little truth to light once again:<br />
<a href="http://www.taccmd.tacticalwargames.net/viewtopic.php?f=76&t=29959" target="_blank">http://www.taccmd.tacticalwargames.net/viewtopic.php?f=76&t=29959</a><br />
<br />
We, as a community, are served by some pretty amazing people; people with skills, talents, dreams, motivation, and even personal lives, tragedy, concern, loss and failure. We are niche community, hungering for more and more, but all in all, things in this hobby are fleeting. The items wont be around forever, nor will the creative minds who bring us these things.<br />
<br />
As far as Exodus Wars goes, I have 2 huge armies in bags waiting to be assembled, so I'm good there - but I've wanted models from Microworld Games and now Onslaught Miniatures for some time. I know I don't have the funds to grab huge amounts of models that I want, and who knows - maybe in these individual cases they'll both be very successful and I'll have my decade to wait - but maybe not.<br />
<br />
Then there are the giving souls who make being a part of this gaming community so rewarding. As I've delved into the world of 10mm fantasy, I have decided to stick with 6mm terrain as I don't find the size difference too jarring - and I do have an awful lot of 6mm sci-fi anyway. In particular, dealing with and purchasing from Mick at <a href="http://www.levenminiatures.co.uk/" target="_blank">Leven Miniatures</a> has been fantastic. His customer service and responsiveness has been refreshing, and his models, well...so cool!<br />
<br />
The most recent treat was during a recent order, I asked if a particular building type (a forge or blacksmith's shop) would ever be on his radar - to which he responded that he was actually already in the process of making one! He kept me appraised during the creative process, and is shipping out a prototype with my other stuff this week. It's stuff like this that makes me want to continue contributing with my dollars to this community of ours, so that it can keep growing and thriving.<br />
<br />
I'll wrap this up with a few of the "small" people that I'm happy to have interacted with recently - not a complete list, not trying to dis anyone by omission, etc...:<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.levenminiatures.co.uk/" target="_blank">Leven Miniatures</a> for levels of awesomeness as already described<br />
Brent Spivey of <a href="http://bombshell-games.com/" target="_blank">Bombshell Games</a> for his group rules and responsiveness on the forums<br />
<a href="http://pendraken.co.uk/" target="_blank">Pendraken Miniatures</a><br />
Robert at <a href="http://www.shogunminiatures.com/" target="_blank">Shogun Miniatures</a> for his great magnetic bases<br />
<br />
<br />
Yea...this is a pointless task because soon I'll be thanking the entire world.<br />
<br />
Let me wrap this up:<br />
<span style="color: yellow;"><span style="font-size: large;">Buy now - the items you want may not be available forever!</span></span>Kealios Achilles-Fanghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14426175974761536021noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5356123644225315043.post-5988345027110252432015-07-16T10:41:00.000-07:002016-03-20T12:45:04.543-07:00My 10mm Vampire Counts - list buildingI initially posted my entry into Warmaster with a dual Wood Elves - Vampire Counts post - but since I am actually using these as references for ideas, etc, I decided to separate the two lists into posts of their own.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://wrathruinandthereddawn.blogspot.com/search/label/Vampire%20Counts" target="_blank">Wrath Ruin and the Red Dawn</a>
has some amazing conversions for his Vampire Counts army - many of
which appear to model the current Warhammer Fantasy 8th Edition army
list.<br />

<a href="http://turbilminiatures.blogspot.com/2013/10/10mm-undead-army.html" target="_blank">Pendraken Undead models pictured by Turbil</a><br />
<br />
Ultimately I settled on these quantities. For ease of reference, I
will link the model's entries on their respective website - I apologize
for any broken links in advance.<br />
<br />
<b>WARMASTER - 10mm Vampire Counts</b><br />

HEROES:<br />
Lots! 2 Generals (1 mounted), 4 Vampires, 2 Wizards...1 Black Coach<br />
<br />
And look at this fun thing! It's from <a href="http://www.dgsgames.com/">DGS Games</a>. It'll be a fun vampire item! I think it could be used as a Winged Nightmare mount, or even a dragon of some sorts for Mayhem?<br />

For actual lists, I threw this together:<br />
<a href="http://wm-selector.appspot.com/army_selector.html?list=vampirecounts&label=&print=l,sl,sr,miu,sp&0=6&1=6&2=2&3=4&4=2&5=3&6=2&7=2&8=1&9=2&9-0=1&9-1=1&10=2&10-WP=1&10-RR=1" target="_blank">http://wm-selector.appspot.com/army_selector.html?list=vampirecounts&label=&print=l,sl,sr,miu,sp&0=6&1=6&2=2&3=4&4=2&5=3&6=2&7=2&8=1&9=2&9-0=1&9-1=1&10=2&10-WP=1&10-RR=1</a><br />
<br />
A really good idea from <a href="http://theultimatewarmaster.com/2013/07/" target="_blank">http://theultimatewarmaster.com/2013/07/ :</a><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://theultimatewarmaster.files.wordpress.com/2013/07/tomb-king-raised-unit1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://theultimatewarmaster.files.wordpress.com/2013/07/tomb-king-raised-unit1.jpg" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
" Due to the nature of the undead army and being able to raise new units
in battle (which are worth no victory point’s, and contribute nothing
towards army break point). I was wondering how I can depict these
without confusing myself and my opponent. So after having a quick chat
to my local GW manager, I came up with the idea of painting the Skeleton
Warriors ethereal.<br />
<br />
The idea is to have at least 4 of these units painted. It was quite
simple to do. I undercoated black, dry brushed the whole unit white and
then gave it a blue wash. I am thinking of giving the whole unit a very
faint white dry brush again. Not too sure yet."<br />
<br />
<a href="http://hetairoiwargames.blogspot.co.uk/2013/02/wm-ethereal-host.html" target="_blank">http://hetairoiwargames.blogspot.co.uk/2013/02/wm-ethereal-host.html</a> is another site with spirit hosts, so easily painted!<br />

As I've gotten older, my love has remained, but now I like more expensive stuff (go figure).<br />
<br />
As I've been exploring 10mm fantasy, I have read numerous times that people use 6mm terrain and it works fine, since the ground scale isnt the same as the model scale. With that in mind, I invested pretty heavily into Total Battle Miniatures and Leven Miniatures 6mm lines. I intend to use these with Warmaster and Mayhem, specifically, but they'll also flesh out my 6mm sci-fi tables as needed. That's why I went the Napoleonic route - you can see this stuff across Europe still, and it wouldnt be so out of place with grav tanks floating by.<br />
<br />
Here is my version of the Hill Town Tile 1 found <a href="http://totalbattleminiatures.com/tilesandroads/tiles/30mm.html">here</a>. Because I dont do historical gaming, I mix and match as I see fit; I looked into colors, but not extensively. Let me apologize for my photography. I HATE blurry photos, but some of these are.<br />
<br />
This is the final painted version without any trees added. I will be flocking the appropriate areas as soon as the extras I have on order from Perfect Six arrive (wells, crates and barrels, etc).<br />
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/112338465@N05/18846517134" title="20150703_180815 by Gavin McClements, on Flickr"><img alt="20150703_180815" height="360" src="https://c2.staticflickr.com/4/3793/18846517134_c89dcb50fc_z.jpg" width="640" /> </a><br />
I decided to add some trees here and there. I used a pin vise to drill into the resin, and superglued the trees in. The medium and dark green trees were from eBay vendors. The three light green ones were new from Leven Miniatures - since I love color variety, I was happy to get these in the 50mm variety.

<br />
With the GW Warmaster Dark Elf models in the town, I think they'll be fine on the table. Yes, there is a size discrepancy, but it isnt staggering (at least to my eyes), and I plan on moving forward with the 3 dozen other buildings I have :) <br />

<br />
Here is a proxy list that I'll be pulling heavily from: <br />
<a href="http://www.forum.specialist-arms.com/index.php?topic=5696.0" target="_blank">http://www.forum.specialist-arms.com/index.php?topic=5696.0</a><br />

<br />
This list needs a lot of help because I'm not sure which models to get for it. There are so many "Knight" models out there, but I dont truly understand historical periods, etc, so if you have advice?<br />
<br />
The <a href="https://www.kallistra.co.uk/?page=19#anchor1romano">Kallistra line</a> looks really promising for most options because they're in strips, and seem to fit the bill<span style="color: yellow;"><span style="background-color: white;">. <span style="background-color: black;">NOTE: Kallistra bills themselves as 12mm. This might explain their larger size *LOL! (at my own silliness for missing this)*</span></span></span><br />
<br />
<u><b>Bowmen</b></u> - <span class="prodcatlistcode">803</span>

I have to admit, however, that their 100 Years War models (<span class="prodcatlistcode">H-901 </span>

<u><b>Knights</b></u> - These should be regal - after all, they're the heart and soul of the Bretonnian army. The Kallistra "British Romano" knights dont have the right look, I feel...still looking.<br />

They also look to be <a href="http://www.forum.specialist-arms.com/index.php?topic=564.10;wap2" target="_blank">reasonably balanced</a> with lots of options to keep the list from getting stale. For some ideas of fluff, check out <a href="https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B_Redi9cZJ5iYXlDT0xjcGxOaVE/edit" target="_blank">https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B_Redi9cZJ5iYXlDT0xjcGxOaVE/edit</a> from <a href="http://warhammerarmiesproject.blogspot.se/">http://warhammerarmiesproject.blogspot.se/</a><br />
<br />
Alternatively, <a href="http://www.geocities.ws/TimesSquare/7755/warmaster/warmasternippon.html" target="_blank">this is a variation</a> on the Fan list from the 2009 Armies book. <br />
<br />
One note: If I go with Magister Militum as I am inclined to, you'll see a size difference between the Nippons and my other armies. Here is a MM Ashigaru (with spear) compared to the far left model, a Eureka Elf Archer:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://underthemountainblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/under-the-mountain-31-october-2009-5879.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://underthemountainblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/under-the-mountain-31-october-2009-5879.jpg" height="213" width="320" /></a></div>
As a side note, I just discovered <a href="https://translate.google.com/translate?depth=1&hl=en&ie=UTF8&nv=1&prev=_t&rurl=translate.google.com&sl=it&tl=en&u=http://www.castlearts-it.com/" target="_blank">www.castlearts-it.com/</a> so will have to check out their tasty items!<br />
<br />
<u><b>Samurai</b></u> - Magister Militum has a splendid line. Some Mix-and-Match could be fun between the ranged and hand-weapon models, since Samurai are a 3/1 unit.<br />
<a href="http://www.magistermilitum.com/scale/10mm/sam1-samurai-command.html" target="_blank">http://www.magistermilitum.com/scale/10mm/sam1-samurai-command.html</a><br />

<a href="http://www.magistermilitum.com/scale/10mm/sam2-samurai-bowmen.html" target="_blank">http://www.magistermilitum.com/scale/10mm/sam2-samurai-bowmen.html</a><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.magistermilitum.com/media/catalog/product/8/0/8077_4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://www.magistermilitum.com/media/catalog/product/8/0/8077_4.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
<a href="http://www.magistermilitum.com/scale/10mm/sam3-samurai-with-hand-weapons.html" target="_blank">http://www.magistermilitum.com/scale/10mm/sam3-samurai-with-hand-weapons.html</a><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.magistermilitum.com/media/catalog/product/8/0/8078_4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://www.magistermilitum.com/media/catalog/product/8/0/8078_4.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<a href="https://www.kallistra.co.uk/?page=18#anchor9001hh" target="_blank">Kallistra</a> is neat because they come in strips - but so far, I've been very impressed with MM's models.<br />
<br />
<u><b>Ashigaru Spearmen:</b></u> Again, many choices. <a href="http://www.magistermilitum.com/scale/10mm/sam6-ashigaru-with-spears.html" target="_blank">http://www.magistermilitum.com/scale/10mm/sam6-ashigaru-with-spears.html</a> seem like a good way to go - their spears arent too long, which seems to be an issue the Kallistra spearmen have?<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://underthemountainblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/under-the-mountain-31-october-2009-5873.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://underthemountainblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/under-the-mountain-31-october-2009-5873.jpg" height="213" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<u><b>Ronin: </b></u>It seems that the only way to differentiate these from Samurai, since according to reports I've read, ronin were allowed to keep their arms, is the back banner - so let's try some models without those.<br />
<span class="prodcatlistcode">Kallistra H-9002 </span>
<span class="prodcatlistdesc">Foot Samurai seem to fit the bill:</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.kallistra.co.uk/images/products/296/1336689130-9002p.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://www.kallistra.co.uk/images/products/296/1336689130-9002p.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<a href="http://pendraken.co.uk/Renaissance-c12/Samurai-sc41/" target="_blank">http://pendraken.co.uk/Renaissance-c12/Samurai-sc41/</a> has other options as well.<br />
<br />
<u><b>Warrior Monks: </b></u><a href="http://www.magistermilitum.com/scale/10mm/sam8-warrior-monks.html" target="_blank">http://www.magistermilitum.com/scale/10mm/sam8-warrior-monks.html</a> seem an obvious choice.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.magistermilitum.com/media/catalog/product/8/0/8083_4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://www.magistermilitum.com/media/catalog/product/8/0/8083_4.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
<u><b>Zealot Monks</b></u> - <a href="http://eurekaminusa.com/collections/fantasy-10mm-by-alan-marsh/products/400fan34" target="_blank">http://eurekaminusa.com/collections/fantasy-10mm-by-alan-marsh/products/400fan34</a> seem perfect, and the "wizard" look might help out the Command stands a bit.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0291/6817/products/400FAN34.jpg?v=1385332402" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0291/6817/products/400FAN34.jpg?v=1385332402" height="116" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Shrine:Check this out! <a href="http://www.castlearts-it.com/index.php?page=prodotti&cat=giappone&scat=ES">http://www.castlearts-it.com/index.php?page=prodotti&cat=giappone&scat=ES</a> has the perfect shrine!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.castlearts-it.com/images/catalogo/foto/JPN-K24.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://www.castlearts-it.com/images/catalogo/foto/JPN-K24.jpg" height="265" width="320" /></a></div>
<u><b>Temple Imps:</b></u> These are basically kobolds, from what I can gather online.<br />
<br />
Temple Oni: <a href="http://www.15mm.co.uk/products/sgfp02-oni-pack" target="_blank">http://www.15mm.co.uk/products/sgfp02-oni-pack</a> (they're a bit large, listed at 23mm tall, but oh well...)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0286/8990/products/sgfp02_750pix_large.jpg?v=1399542674" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0286/8990/products/sgfp02_750pix_large.jpg?v=1399542674" height="200" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
A smaller version could just be the "Ogres" from Eureka - not as cool looking, though!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0291/6817/products/400FAN60.jpg?v=1401919421" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0291/6817/products/400FAN60.jpg?v=1401919421" height="118" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Tengu: <a href="http://www.15mm.co.uk/products/sgfp01-tengu-pack" target="_blank">http://www.15mm.co.uk/products/sgfp01-tengu-pack</a> (again, a tad big at 20mm, but oh well)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0286/8990/products/sgfp01_750pix_large.jpg?v=1399536936" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0286/8990/products/sgfp01_750pix_large.jpg?v=1399536936" height="210" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<u><b>Samurai Cavalry:</b></u> MM again has the most dynamic poses that I can see, and the archers and swords are split already.<br />
<a href="http://www.magistermilitum.com/scale/10mm/sam4-mounted-samurai.html" target="_blank">http://www.magistermilitum.com/scale/10mm/sam4-mounted-samurai.html</a><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.magistermilitum.com/media/catalog/product/8/0/8079_4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://www.magistermilitum.com/media/catalog/product/8/0/8079_4.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<u><b>Temple Dogs:</b></u> I would LOVE to use some Eureka Ki-Rin or Fu-Dogs for these. Regarding if the riders come separate, Eureka's response was, "All of the sets 400FAN35-40 come with
separate riders, none are one piece." So YES, this will work!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0291/6817/products/400FAN38.jpg?v=1385332755" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0291/6817/products/400FAN38.jpg?v=1385332755" height="113" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0291/6817/products/400FAN37.jpg?v=1385332602" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0291/6817/products/400FAN37.jpg?v=1385332602" height="102" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Another great option is <a href="http://www.magistermilitum.com/scale/10mm/fmc615-temple-lion-dogs-x9.html">http://www.magistermilitum.com/scale/10mm/fmc615-temple-lion-dogs-x9.html</a><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.magistermilitum.com/media/catalog/product/f/m/fmc615-_2_.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://www.magistermilitum.com/media/catalog/product/f/m/fmc615-_2_.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<u><b>Daimyo / Abbot:</b></u> Likely a few choices in the many Command packs I've located. I'm SURE I'll have enough...<br />
<br />
Pendraken has a Seated General. He's, well, not intimidating, but what the heck.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://pendraken.co.uk/ProductImages/SAM1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://pendraken.co.uk/ProductImages/SAM1.jpg" height="200" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<u><b>Hatamoto:</b></u> Again, the Command packs will have figures I can use.<br />
<br />
<u><b>Dragonne:</b></u> This is going to have to be converted, I think. How about Lions from Splintered Light (15mm...seems appropriate):<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://ep.yimg.com/ca/I/yhst-133546587642587_2264_108879423" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://ep.yimg.com/ca/I/yhst-133546587642587_2264_108879423" height="112" width="320" /></a></div>
...and wings from a Eureka Gorgon rider? (hopefully they'll scale well)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0291/6817/products/400FAN13_944ce7c4-a954-4576-a7b8-7b31f13473b5.jpeg?v=1384933229" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0291/6817/products/400FAN13_944ce7c4-a954-4576-a7b8-7b31f13473b5.jpeg?v=1384933229" height="106" width="320" /></a></div>
For the rider, well...I hate to say it, but maybe a <a href="http://pendraken.co.uk/FSA5-p5048/" target="_blank">Samurai Ape</a> from Pendraken? He seems to be one of the only separately modeled rider I can find - and I can paint the face as a mask - easy enough!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://pendraken.co.uk/ProductImages/FSA5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://pendraken.co.uk/ProductImages/FSA5.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Or...I could just try this <a href="http://ironwindmetals.com/store/product_info.php?products_id=8098">Winged Lion from Iron Wind</a>:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://ironwindmetals.com/store/images/fantasy/01-180.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://ironwindmetals.com/store/images/fantasy/01-180.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
(This was done here, methinks, or very close):</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1039.photobucket.com/albums/a472/dalekalert/10mm%20warmaster%20nippon%20samurai/shishi2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i1039.photobucket.com/albums/a472/dalekalert/10mm%20warmaster%20nippon%20samurai/shishi2.jpg" height="261" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Or...a "<a href="http://ironwindmetals.com/store/product_info.php?products_id=7000">Drakkone</a>" from IW:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://ironwindmetals.com/store/images/fantasy/DF-071.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://ironwindmetals.com/store/images/fantasy/DF-071.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<u><b>Retinue:</b></u> So many models needed!<br />
Kallistra's <span class="prodcatlistcode">"H-9006 Samurai Command" and "</span><span class="prodcatlistcode">H-9010</span><span class="prodcatlistdesc"> Samurai Banners and Standards"</span><br />
<span class="prodcatlistdesc">Pendraken's <a href="http://pendraken.co.uk/SAM20-p2952/" target="_blank">http://pendraken.co.uk/SAM20-p2952/ </a></span><br />

<br />
Lastly, not for Warmaster so much but for Mayhem, maybe, here is a <a href="http://ironwindmetals.com/store/product_info.php?products_id=7016">Celestial Dragon from Iron Wind</a>:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://ironwindmetals.com/store/images/fantasy/01-129.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://ironwindmetals.com/store/images/fantasy/01-129.jpg" /></a></div>

<a href="http://folk.uio.no/arnsteio/samurai/" target="_blank">http://folk.uio.no/arnsteio/samurai/</a> has some historical comments about the different manufacturer's historical lines, if interested. To summarize:<br />
<br />
<b>"Pendraken</b>: Pose = Several of Pendraken's figures have an earlyish sengoku feeling; e.g. their ashigaru bowman has no armour, and their Ashigaru Spear has no jingasa helmet, just a hachimaki head band. All samurai cavalry were attended by go-kenin; these are probably best made with Pendraken's running figures, though I mix in some AIM for variety. Pendraken's "SAM8 Ashigaru Naginata" is very useful; with a straightened weapon it is a charging yari-wielding ashigaru in standard-issue ashigaru kit. Their armed peasants make for great variety.<a href="https://www.blogger.com/null" name="infantry"></a><a href="https://www.blogger.com/null" name="infantry"></a><br />
<br />
<b>Irregular</b>: Pose = Quite static. Although Irregular has the weakest range, their figures will enhance the visuals of your army when complementing the other brands. I like the variety their straw raincoats can provide. None of Irregular's figures have yari, just naginata. This is unfortunate. TSAM6 is possibly the most useful 10mm samurai figure on the market (naginata-wielding ashigaru in standard-issue kit, standing at attention), doing time as nagae-yari wielder or banner bearer (I exchange his short naginata for a long piano wire) and a host of "standing around"-related tasks.<br />
<br />
I use Pendraken and Irregular cavalry together; this gives a good choice between active and passive poses. Samurai horses were small (130cm to the shoulder) so it can't be that bad."<br />
<br />
Castle Arts claims: "My models are fully compatible with Pendraken, other clubs have already bought my samurai and integrated them perfectly."<br />
<br />
In all my blisters the sashimono (samurai or ashigaru) are INCLUDED.<br />
AIM (?) seems to be the middle between these two, but seems out of print<br />

<span style="color: yellow;">Painting</span>: (taken from <a href="http://theminiaturespage.com/boards/msg.mv?id=384752">http://theminiaturespage.com/boards/msg.mv?id=384752</a>)<br />
<i>"The good thing is that the "rules" for army painting when it comes to
sengoku period armies should be seen as more of a general guideline.
It's not like Napoleonic armies, and you can find examples of all kinds
of ways that armies looked, from those who were almost uniform and well
structured towards the end of the period, to some forces that were
little more than a bunch of haphazardly equipped troops with very little
in common.</i><br />
<br />
<i>Here are the general "rules" as I interpret them after reading a bunch of books (some better than others):</i><br />
<br />
<i>1)
Armour were laquered, with black being by far the most common colour.
On second place you will find rust-brown, and then red. Far lower than
these you will find unusual laquer like blue, gold and green, which were
unlikely to be worn by rank-and-file.</i><br />
<br />
<i>2) Dresses were usually not
uniform, with samurai typically wearing more expensive and colourful
dresses, and ashigaru and peasants wearing everything from barely a
loincloth to dresses with more dull colours like brown, grey and buff. </i><br />
<br />
<i>3)
Uniforms were rare, and most troops were responsible for getting their
own gear, or had them provided by their direct feudal lord. So even if a
lord dressed his 25 guys equally, his neighbour would not dress his
guys exactly the same. Generally, places with more resources had more
opportunities for mass-equipping troops, and you would see more
uniformity in equipment and heraldry the later you get in the period.</i><br />
<br />
<i>Units
wearing predominately red, for example, are usually from the latter
part of the period, when power had started to get centralized around a
few leaders. But even the famously "all red" army of Ii, were likely not
able to equip their entire army with uniforms, and it was more likely
that they could muster front ranks wearing mostly red.</i><br />
<br />
<i>4)
Heraldry, in the form of different types of banners, were the main way
to identify military formations on the field. Not dresses or armour.</i><br />
<br />
<i>For
me, especially at 6mm, these "rules" means that I tend to take some
artistic license. If you paint an army with mostly black armour and just
random colours for the sleeves and pants, it won't look all that
inspiring on the battlefield. Especially not if you have two opposing
armies looking more or less similar. So I tend to use coloured armour
far more than is realistic, and also semi-uniform dresses. </i><br />
<br />
<i>For
example, when I paint my two Takeda contingents, I decided to go with
red armour on one, and green on the other. Very unhistorical, but it
looks great. For both the red and green armoured ones I paint most of
the dresses blue, white or yellow. Also unhistorical, but this means
that I get some kind of cohesion between the contingents by using the
same palette for the secondary colours.</i><br />
<i>Most importantly, this
means that I get the whole Takeda army to look very different from the
opposing army, which has all black armour, with Tokugawa forces wearing
mostly blue dresses, and Hosokawa wearing mostly red dresses. Finally,
the banners ties the different contingents together.</i><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i.imgur.com/Z4vUm.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i.imgur.com/Z4vUm.jpg" height="146" width="400" /></a></div>
<i>(Example of varying Takeda banners tieing together the army with uniform
colours, despite armour being different. From left: Takeda, Takeda,
Hosokawa, Tokugawa, Takeda, Takeda, Takeda)</i><br />
<br />
<i>So, basically I
disregard "rule" 2, no uniform dresses, to make the armies look more
interesting in 6mm. I find that the scale demands that you paint with
strong colours and bold colour schemes, or the minis will just blend
into each other. So I might be even more ahistorical in this scale,
simple because painting 6mm is a different beast than painting 15mm or
28mm.</i><br />
<br />
<i>As I see it, you can decide to go for representing a
historical look as close as you can, or use some artistic license.
Personally I use periods with more rigid uniformity (Napoleonics and
WW2) to get that aspect of the hobby, and I use less rigid periods
(Sengoku Japan, Medieval Europe) to make more "fanciful" armies. As long
as you are honest about which way you go, do what suits your passion,
and paint according to the end result that you have in mind.</i><br />
<i><br />Edit: just because I can't shut up:</i><br />
<i>When painting Baccus 6mm samurai, I find that I have a limited number of areas to use to convey a colour scheme. These are <br />1) The armour<br />2) The pants and sleeves<br />3) The belt and sun cover on the jingasa helmets of ashigaru<br />4) The banners</i><br />
<br />
<i>The
scale is simply too small and the number of soldiers too large for the
lacing on the armour to be a) possible to paint without investing too
much time, and b) visible on the finished rank-and-file troops. I do
paint them on generals and stuff though.</i><br />
<br />
<i>So, for a 6mm army, I
find that if you keep two or three of these areas similar for an entire
contingent, you can vary the others and still keep them looking uniform,
without looking identical. You will typically want to paint at least
one of them in a striking colour, and another one in a contrasting
colour that makes the striking colour more visible. </i><br />
<br />
<i>What does
this mean? For example, I find that painting the belts and sun cover on
the helmets white is a great way to make a dark coloured armour visible.
Combine it with a bright colour on the sleeves and pants, and the whole
miniature becomes visible, despite them being small. If I went with a
dark blue belt, the whole torso and upper legs would risk looking like a
blur. With a red armour, you could go with a very light blue or yellow
belt, and still get this contrast.</i><br />
<br />
<i>This also affects my choice of
colour on banners and sleeves/pants. For example, in the picture you can
see that the Hosokawa has a bright yellow banner, black armour, and red
pants/sleeves. I find that the two bold colours make a good match, and
the black and white areas inbetween them (armour and belt) helps to keep
them from "bleeding" into each other. </i><br />
<br />
<i>So, if you are unsure of
where to begin with painting 6mm samurai, you could always make a
general plan of attack based on these areas. Decide which ones you want
uniform and which ones you want to vary (depending on how historical you
want to be), and think about if you can put more neutral colours (like
black or white) in between the more striking colours." </i>Kealios Achilles-Fanghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14426175974761536021noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5356123644225315043.post-22338318943086913552015-06-26T09:58:00.001-07:002015-06-26T09:58:39.993-07:00My Reintroduction to WarmasterI had my reintroduction battle to Warmaster over the weekend with my friend Aron and his wonderfully painted armies. As we sat to choose our armies, he asked, "What do you want to play?" "What do you have," I asked. "All of them" was the response :) Gotta love it.<br />
<br />
We ended up choosing his High Elves vs my Dark Elves, 2000 points. This isnt a full battle report, but a few pics of the action and some comments.<br />
<br />
The formation of 3 melee units in column with a ranged unit spread
across their front made for a nice brigade. Dark Elf shooting is brutal
up close, but surprisingly the crossbowmen actually fought well in hand
to hand!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxE4Hm88jNF-ohDxOxIOALvWfxVYLEU46ee3MGYEEWfeH45DPHalWNxpdr7yK6WD9dJmjP2bi86oL-VO4HJKNbqZpDDq8jEeB4fEZPXlAtsmXLYGu4mGpFOATxs-621ihSg_x2O5E1mWE/s1600/20150620_173225%255B1%255D.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxE4Hm88jNF-ohDxOxIOALvWfxVYLEU46ee3MGYEEWfeH45DPHalWNxpdr7yK6WD9dJmjP2bi86oL-VO4HJKNbqZpDDq8jEeB4fEZPXlAtsmXLYGu4mGpFOATxs-621ihSg_x2O5E1mWE/s400/20150620_173225%255B1%255D.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
The forced drive back of ranged is a little much, I think. It seems
like something that units should be able to defend against instead of
automatically going back if they suffer even a single hit. This ranged
battle between his elves in the barn yard and my line of crossbows by
the church went back and forth. Invariably the unit that fell back would
just march back forward to their former position, but I guess that's
part of the game, right? It takes an order to do so, which is a
potential fail...<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Once the Hydra got in battle, Oh Lord...however, this photo illustrates my core problem with the command mechanic of Warmaster.<br />
<br />
In the top left, you can see a Dragon Rider escorting a brigade of Silver Helms, and in the left forefront you can see my Dark Riders. My riders got one order and advanced to this position; they then took one hit and the right column was driven back 2cm...there they stayed the rest of the game. The High Elves had it worse, though. Those knights NEVER MOVED. Aron even swapped out commanders towards the end, trying to do anything to get them into the fight.<br />

I guess that's the game, though, right? Things dont go the way you want...but it rankles a bit still. Oh well. Here you can see the Cold Ones tearing up some archers on the hill to the right flank - good fun and eats!<br />

I blame this video on my win :) Aron had purchased some new dice specifically because of this balance video, and his new dice arrived in the mail as we were setting up the game - and they rolled horribly! <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe width="320" height="266" class="YOUTUBE-iframe-video" data-thumbnail-src="https://i.ytimg.com/vi/VI3N4Qg-JZM/0.jpg" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/VI3N4Qg-JZM?feature=player_embedded" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe></div>
So over all, I had a really enjoyable time. I am buying 10mm armies for Mayhem, but might as well make them Warmaster-legal, right? I also bought a copy of the Battle of Five Armies rules, as Aron informed me that they are pretty much the Warmaster Ancients + Magic, etc combined.<br />
<br />
I really didnt like that both of us had units sitting around doing nothing for the entire game. A "standing order" or "guaranteed first turn order" house rule that I've read about might fix this - but I'll try to get over it. Until next time!<br />

I've walked my hotel through a complete renovation before, and the paperwork that was required then was enormous - I felt a bit similar as I tracked all the different manufacturers and orders coming in for this project.<br />
<br />
Again referencing <a href="http://www.athens-fantasy.gr/2013/12/wood-elves-warmaster-without-gw-miniatures/" target="_blank">Athens Fantasy</a>'s blog, I started sorting my Eureka into the different poses. Let me say this about Eureka models: <b>SO MUCH FLASH! </b>Seriously, though...they're nice models, but cleaning them is going to be a LOT of work, and some models are really bent out of shape or slightly broken (bows, spears, etc).<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.athens-fantasy.gr/wp-content/uploads//2013/12/eureka-wood-elves-400FAN07-300x176.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://www.athens-fantasy.gr/wp-content/uploads//2013/12/eureka-wood-elves-400FAN07-300x176.png" height="187" width="320" /></a></div>
Honestly, I felt like I was sorting a CCG instead of models from a renowned manufacturer, because of the 7 packs of Eureka archers I ordered, no two were identical in quantities. After all was said and done, I ended up with:<br />
Pose 1: 48<br />
Pose 2: 47<br />
Pose 3: 7<br />
Pose 4: 7<br />
Pose 5: 6 (!!)<br />
Pose 6: 48<br />
Pose 7: 48<br />
<br />
I guess in the end, things mostly averaged out, but yea, one pack didn't even have the Standard Bearer (#5) in it!<br />
<br />
I also had 7 packs of the Infantry to sort.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.athens-fantasy.gr/wp-content/uploads//2013/12/eureka-wood-elves-400FAN08-300x173.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://www.athens-fantasy.gr/wp-content/uploads//2013/12/eureka-wood-elves-400FAN08-300x173.png" height="184" width="320" /></a></div>
These were even more random in their quantities, assuming because there were 8 poses instead of 7 (and at least every pack had their 3 command models!). I ended up with:<br />
Pose 1: 43<br />
Pose 2:37<br />
Pose 3: 7<br />
Pose 4: 7<br />
Pose 5: 7 <br />
Pose 6: 44<br />
Pose 7: 38<br />
Pose 8: 36<br />
<br />
Here is the sorted, non-cleaned up lot:<br />

I don't have my Pendraken models yet (ordered from The War Store on May 7th...almost a month ago), but here are some comparisons with Copplestone, Eureka, and Magister Militum.<br />
<br />
On the left is Eureka 400FAN24, on the right is Magister Militum FEF-404. MM is bigger and nicer, but they should mix nicely I think, especially since Eureka is much more dynamic in pose.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

This is a Eureka archer 400FAN07 on the left, with a Copplestone Casting TM17 Ranger on the right. CC is HUGE compared to Eureka, with the head of the model on the right coming to 13mm, and the Eureka model being almost exactly at 10mm (the base is included here). I will likely compensate by putting the smaller models in the back to try a little "forced perspective"...fortunately I don't have many CC models, and the Pendraken models coming are mostly for the Vampires.<br />

Leftmost is the 15mm Splintered Light Dryads (note the dryad in the tree is about the same size as the farmost right model), then SL Wood Trolls, 6mm Lesser Treekin from Microworld Games, and lastly a dryad from the Eureka Woodland Creatures package.</div>

For some other models, these Eureka Deaemonaurs <span class="smallText">[400FAN033] could be </span>Centigors:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Beastlord Command, Ogre Beasts and Beast Lord Command <span class="smallText">[400FAN015]</span>: - but will one of these be big enough/good enough to be a Beastlord General?</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
For the Doombull Hero, I imagine I can find a nice 15mm Minotaur figure, but I was surprised that Splintered Light doesnt seem to have any...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="http://www.magistermilitum.com/bmn2-minotaurs-7614.html" target="_blank">http://www.magistermilitum.com/bmn2-minotaurs-7614.html</a> seem like a good idea, though at 22mm tall, they'd be BIG...<i>[note <a href="http://warhammerfb.wikia.com/wiki/Beastmen">http://warhammerfb.wikia.com/wiki/Beastmen</a> lists Minotaurs at twice the size of a man, so maybe this WILL work...]</i></div>

These are sexy, actually <a href="http://www.magistermilitum.com/era/fantasy/bmn3-pannite-or-goat-headed-beastmen.html" target="_blank">(Magister Militum BMN3 Beastmen)</a> and at 18mm tall, might be a fantastic fit:</div>

I guess that's why they play 28mm!</div>

She is busy nightly with her crafts, while I have really only just recently gotten back into my creative mode. Our 15th anniversary is coming up, and since I was buying some fun stuff from Scenic Express, I chose this as an opportunity to get some of the "brighter" colored items and give them a test run.<br />
<br />
I proposed the idea to her and she loved it, so one of our rare dates without the kids, we set about locating the perfect start: the case. It wasn't long before we found it at the Container Store:<br />
<a href="http://www.containerstore.com/shop?productId=10022884&N=&Ntt=display" target="_blank">http://www.containerstore.com/shop?productId=10022884&N=&Ntt=display</a><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://images.containerstore.com/catalogimages/231745/10045810MultiLevelDisplayBox_28_600.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://images.containerstore.com/catalogimages/231745/10045810MultiLevelDisplayBox_28_600.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
Roughly 10"x5", the stackable "steps" inside are completely removable - and at only $10, it was a no brainer.<br />
<br />
I started off with some trees, which allowed me to monkey with some of the different techniques I have been linking here.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/nn100/Kealios/My%20terrain/HO%20scale%20Japanese%20Garden/20150519_1657271_zpsptrjckkq.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/nn100/Kealios/My%20terrain/HO%20scale%20Japanese%20Garden/20150519_1657271_zpsptrjckkq.jpg" height="225" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/nn100/Kealios/My%20terrain/HO%20scale%20Japanese%20Garden/20150519_1658251_zpsy8qkdzsb.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/nn100/Kealios/My%20terrain/HO%20scale%20Japanese%20Garden/20150519_1658251_zpsy8qkdzsb.jpg" height="225" width="400" /></a></div>
A little 1/2" foamcore from Michaels, and I had the beginnings of the scene.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/nn100/Kealios/My%20terrain/HO%20scale%20Japanese%20Garden/20150519_1656401_zpstdubybpd.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/nn100/Kealios/My%20terrain/HO%20scale%20Japanese%20Garden/20150519_1656401_zpstdubybpd.jpg" height="225" width="400" /></a></div>
I use this grout material that I got at Home Depot years ago - it has a fine texture similar to buttercream frosting - I mix it in a bowl with a TINY amount of water, and I mean just enough to get it wet. It spreads nicely at that point, and it has adhesive in it already, so I have never felt the need to use white glue with it.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/nn100/Kealios/My%20terrain/HO%20scale%20Japanese%20Garden/20150519_1700121_zpsurnmopr5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/nn100/Kealios/My%20terrain/HO%20scale%20Japanese%20Garden/20150519_1700121_zpsurnmopr5.jpg" height="400" width="225" /></a></div>
I coated it on the trees, the slopes, and any areas that I thought might need it. For the steeper slopes, I used foamcore offcuts under it - this doesn't really shrink much with drying, but I didn't want to push my luck. A few rocks from the fairy garden out front, and some air dry clay for the banks, and it was ready for a good dusting in sand. When I posted this WIP on Facebook, most of my friends (who really don't understand my hobbies at all) asked if I was making a cake...<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/nn100/Kealios/My%20terrain/HO%20scale%20Japanese%20Garden/20150522_1352281_zpslxklg6fp.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/nn100/Kealios/My%20terrain/HO%20scale%20Japanese%20Garden/20150522_1352281_zpslxklg6fp.jpg" height="225" width="400" /></a></div>
My biggest dream for the garden was the use of the SuperLeaf products I had purchased - but given that I was making these trees from scratch and the polyfiber I had was green, I needed a solution to get the foliage onto the armatures. This was the look I wanted, after all:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://athomemms.com/index/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/Flowering-Dogwood-Tree.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://athomemms.com/index/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/Flowering-Dogwood-Tree.jpg" height="201" width="400" /></a></div>
What I really wanted was some kind of gauze that I could distress (like you would do to a cotton ball to make smoke or something) and stretch across the tree frame - but a quick visit to the local RiteAid came up with nothing (well, a few things, but they got relegated to the first aid kit once I discovered how unsuitable they were). I ended up discovering some Fine Mesh Gauze, which didn't distress like I was hoping it would, but seemed viable nonetheless.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/nn100/Kealios/My%20terrain/HO%20scale%20Japanese%20Garden/20150525_1421451_zpsanwoek0q.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/nn100/Kealios/My%20terrain/HO%20scale%20Japanese%20Garden/20150525_1421451_zpsanwoek0q.jpg" height="225" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/nn100/Kealios/My%20terrain/HO%20scale%20Japanese%20Garden/20150525_1443201_zpsrdihrw0c.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/nn100/Kealios/My%20terrain/HO%20scale%20Japanese%20Garden/20150525_1443201_zpsrdihrw0c.jpg" height="225" width="400" /></a></div>
Once the gauze was on and primed along with the rest of the board, I trimmed them a bit with scissors.<br />
<br />
[NOTE: I want to do <a href="http://wargamingwithsilverwhistle.blogspot.com.ar/2015/05/trees-orchards-buildings.html" target="_blank">THIS</a> next time with steel wool, which might give better body than the gauze...]<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjiG1od2mqiYjZ1cuulGLZ8NlXk8HKNuSiu8-FPxRJYt7osBgp7MYu5a7S1oXvy-UKZXotw8vB23oRq2YjTaAOKmye2JhW8XtcnY2_FP6DMzTh7PscshlQEHhwgIlgRQIkk0ulWCtak9yr_/s1600/RSCN3819.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjiG1od2mqiYjZ1cuulGLZ8NlXk8HKNuSiu8-FPxRJYt7osBgp7MYu5a7S1oXvy-UKZXotw8vB23oRq2YjTaAOKmye2JhW8XtcnY2_FP6DMzTh7PscshlQEHhwgIlgRQIkk0ulWCtak9yr_/s1600/RSCN3819.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
The steps were made from air dry clay. The wall in the back left was made from <a href="http://pegasushobbies.net/catalog/p111/%235198-Grey-Bricks-%28Small%29/product_info.html" target="_blank">Pegasus Hobbies</a> bricks. The cobblestone walkway was done with plasticard and was inspired by this:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://allgardenideas.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/Simple-Small-Japanese-Garden-Ideas-with-Stepping-Stone-and-Gravel.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://allgardenideas.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/Simple-Small-Japanese-Garden-Ideas-with-Stepping-Stone-and-Gravel.jpg" height="320" width="400" /></a></div>
By the way...I could look at "Japanese Garden" image searches on Yahoo and Google all day...well, maybe half of a day, before I just had to jump up and create something...<br />
<br />
Some primer, some paint, and now I had this:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/nn100/Kealios/My%20terrain/HO%20scale%20Japanese%20Garden/20150526_1504391_zpsfbu44xeq.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/nn100/Kealios/My%20terrain/HO%20scale%20Japanese%20Garden/20150526_1504391_zpsfbu44xeq.jpg" height="225" width="400" /></a></div>
The green for the pond was a Moss color I got at Michaels...I love it. I am hoping it shows through the Realistic Water nicely...and you can see my Fall work in the background for my 6mm terrain.<br />
<br />
The real fun began as I started to add color to the project. I flocked the grass in <a href="http://woodlandscenics.woodlandscenics.com/show/Item/FT-GG/page/1" target="_blank">"Green Grass"</a> fine flock from Woodland Scenics - I mottled in a bit of other colors, but figuring it would be covered by clump foliage and flowers, I didn't vary it too much. The colors were mostly from Scenic Express' <a href="http://www.sceneryexpress.com/SPRING-FLOWER-ASSORTMENT/productinfo/EX0890/" target="_blank">Spring</a> and <a href="http://www.sceneryexpress.com/SUMMER-FLOWER-ASSORTMENT/productinfo/EX0891/" target="_blank">Summer</a> flower assortments - basically colored turf, and it was wonderful.<br />
<br />
This is with the excess flocking still on the base:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/nn100/Kealios/My%20terrain/HO%20scale%20Japanese%20Garden/20150531_1641461_zpsuytqde8o.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/nn100/Kealios/My%20terrain/HO%20scale%20Japanese%20Garden/20150531_1641461_zpsuytqde8o.jpg" height="225" width="400" /> </a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/nn100/Kealios/My%20terrain/HO%20scale%20Japanese%20Garden/20150531_1641571_zpsfmozd6c4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/nn100/Kealios/My%20terrain/HO%20scale%20Japanese%20Garden/20150531_1641571_zpsfmozd6c4.jpg" height="225" width="400" /></a></div>
The next step is to get the color on the trees, and once that is done, I'll need to do the water portion.<br />
<br />
As I was unsure about how to stop the water effects from coming off the end of the board, I looked about and found this easy tutorial on how to accomplish that:<br />
The Terrain Studio is such a great channel - this is his method that I feel was personally uploaded just for me - so I was quite happy when he put it up. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen="" class="YOUTUBE-iframe-video" data-thumbnail-src="https://i.ytimg.com/vi/NYgOXHBzzwI/0.jpg" frameborder="0" height="266" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/NYgOXHBzzwI?feature=player_embedded" width="320"></iframe></div>
This is another option - I may combine the two when I pour mine.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen="" class="YOUTUBE-iframe-video" data-thumbnail-src="https://i.ytimg.com/vi/YEUfdjbftGw/0.jpg" frameborder="0" height="266" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/YEUfdjbftGw?feature=player_embedded" width="320"></iframe></div>
<br />
I also found a good discussion on water and how it is modeled here. Basically, I can do "dirt" and flock all day long, but I don't tend to do water much - so this helps:<br />
<a href="http://www.diorama-dreamland.at/index.php?id=26" target="_blank">http://www.diorama-dreamland.at/index.php?id=26</a><br />
<br />
Of course, TerranScapes has an excellent video on his Water Effects works:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen="" class="YOUTUBE-iframe-video" data-thumbnail-src="https://i.ytimg.com/vi/vol7P8oHAk4/0.jpg" frameborder="0" height="266" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/vol7P8oHAk4?feature=player_embedded" width="320"></iframe></div>
<br />
I'll get more up as I get closer to finishing this.Kealios Achilles-Fanghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14426175974761536021noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5356123644225315043.post-61261256956263865862015-06-03T20:52:00.002-07:002015-06-03T20:52:18.297-07:00Campaigns in a handbagAs I surf the 'Netverse looking for Warmaster goodies, I came across this cool Campaign write up:<br />
<br />
<a href="http://adventuresinminiaturegaming.blogspot.com/2009/09/warhammer-fantasy-map-campaign-rules.html" target="_blank">http://adventuresinminiaturegaming.blogspot.com/2009/09/warhammer-fantasy-map-campaign-rules.html</a><br />
<br />
He writes more about it, but this core seems solid. It would take very little to modify it to Warmaster, and (yes, I have these tiles) it certainly looks doable.Kealios Achilles-Fanghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14426175974761536021noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5356123644225315043.post-84878267192555077652015-05-15T09:16:00.002-07:002015-08-25T09:06:02.449-07:00Making Trees - inspirationNow that my bocage project is done, I want to make more trees to round out my table. I actually own more than I can use, but colors, man, colors! So many tables are drab...and Spring and Fall (and heck, even summer!) offer such natural beauty!<br />
<br />
As there are more ways to make trees than there are rulesets to play in 28mm... <br />
<br />
I did some research, as always, and finally decided that these two videos were what I wanted to replicate. The first is by an Aussie (?) who is clearly a master woodworker and into making terrain "on the cheap". The second is a more conventional project.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen="" class="YOUTUBE-iframe-video" data-thumbnail-src="https://i.ytimg.com/vi/r5jPBzbpP4U/0.jpg" frameborder="0" height="266" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/r5jPBzbpP4U?feature=player_embedded" width="320"></iframe></div>
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen="" class="YOUTUBE-iframe-video" data-thumbnail-src="https://i.ytimg.com/vi/7tnBIdbL9sY/0.jpg" frameborder="0" height="266" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/7tnBIdbL9sY?feature=player_embedded" width="320"></iframe></div>
<br />
I made the jig from the first video for pines, and hand-twisted wire trees to replicate the second. I hope to have something to show soon.<br />
<br />
As mentioned, there are so many other worthwhile tutorials out there - here are a few more.<br />
<br />
This is a great option for Wargaming trees, as opposed to some of the more complex "train terrain" versions out there:<br />

This link has a really cool way of making trees from aquarium plants - he wrote it for 15mm:<br />

<br />
Before I show you the rest of my project, let me say that I love seeing new products, and Shawn Morris at the Terrain Studio has some very cool Youtube tutorials (his latest seems to be this amazing WW2 European field for 15mm; see below). <br />
<br />
Skip to 2:30 to see a walkthrough of some items from Scenic Express that look like they might be fun to use. 4:20 is where he talks about the plowed fields - I bought 2 on this recommendation and am looking forward to seeing them in action.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen="" class="YOUTUBE-iframe-video" data-thumbnail-src="https://i.ytimg.com/vi/EqDMWxB3fOg/0.jpg" frameborder="0" height="266" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/EqDMWxB3fOg?feature=player_embedded" width="320"></iframe></div>
<br />
Back to the Hedges!<br />
<br />
Here are the Hedgerows with 2 layers of paint: Beastial Brown and Graveyard Earth. The third, lighter color was Country Tan by Apple Barrel - I've never really been happy with the highlight color to go onto the Earth color. Khaki was recommended to me, but this was what I had on hand. I also hit the scouring sponges with a bit of English Ivy color, also from AB.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/nn100/Kealios/My%20terrain/6mm%20Bocage%20Hedgerows/20150512_1442411_zpsdoets1ga.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/nn100/Kealios/My%20terrain/6mm%20Bocage%20Hedgerows/20150512_1442411_zpsdoets1ga.jpg" height="225" width="400" /> </a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/nn100/Kealios/My%20terrain/6mm%20Bocage%20Hedgerows/20150512_1442521_zpstgowkxln.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/nn100/Kealios/My%20terrain/6mm%20Bocage%20Hedgerows/20150512_1442521_zpstgowkxln.jpg" height="225" width="400" /> </a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
As you can see, the sand that I sprinkled on during the clay phase is mostly still there. The primer I painted on was quite thick, and basically glopped it on. The rocks are highlighted with 2 colors of gray.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Finally, the fun part. I mixed up a few different colors of flock, including Woodland Scenic's Green Grass, and some tans, browns, and an Earth mix. A 50/50 water/PVA solution is the usual suspect here:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/nn100/Kealios/My%20terrain/6mm%20Bocage%20Hedgerows/20150512_1557261_zpsr9oxizdc.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/nn100/Kealios/My%20terrain/6mm%20Bocage%20Hedgerows/20150512_1557261_zpsr9oxizdc.jpg" height="225" width="400" /><span id="goog_2061052727"></span><span id="goog_2061052728"></span></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<br />
The English Ivy, once dried, barely showed. I hope to go back with a lighter Leaf color just as an accent.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/nn100/Kealios/My%20terrain/6mm%20Bocage%20Hedgerows/20150512_1557541_zpsoifsmtff.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/nn100/Kealios/My%20terrain/6mm%20Bocage%20Hedgerows/20150512_1557541_zpsoifsmtff.jpg" height="225" width="400" /> </a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
You can clearly see that there was indeed shrinkage with the clay, and it is evident on many of the ends of the hedgerows. This is probably the most frustrating part of the project for me. It is certainly something I can live with, but it is there nonetheless.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The other thing is that I made some of the berms very narrow. This worked artistically, but when it came time to add the clump foliage, didnt give me a lot of room to balance some of the pieces very well. Still, it turned out OK, I think. See for yourself:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/nn100/Kealios/My%20terrain/6mm%20Bocage%20Hedgerows/20150513_1958251_zps3c8y4obl.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/nn100/Kealios/My%20terrain/6mm%20Bocage%20Hedgerows/20150513_1958251_zps3c8y4obl.jpg" height="225" width="400" /> </a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/nn100/Kealios/My%20terrain/6mm%20Bocage%20Hedgerows/20150513_1958581_zps2lzgztqr.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/nn100/Kealios/My%20terrain/6mm%20Bocage%20Hedgerows/20150513_1958581_zps2lzgztqr.jpg" height="225" width="400" /></a></div>

</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
As I ran the Hob-e-Tac along the berms and let it sit, I started sorting the clump foliage. When you pull the pieces out of the package (or the bins I keep them in, in my case), there are all sorts of dingledangles and gribbly bits hanging off them. I pulled a lot of this off and made three piles: bigger pieces (for where the berms were flatter or wider and could accommodate a larger piece), small bits (for the narrower spots), and the leftovers (for filling in places, or covering left over glue bits).</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

One of them (some of them?) were Super Leaf packs in many Spring colors - pinks, purples, etc, so I can continue in my quest to add color to my boards. I already have Fall colors for my trees, but I decided that Spring has great color and I wanted to experiment.<br />

A Japanese Flowing Cherry tree: <br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
One problem I found with my desire to add Spring trees to my table was
the apparent lack of ways to do so. I usually either buy trees off Ebay,
or use various methods combined with Clump Foliage to make them - but
this didnt seem like an option for Cherry, Dogwood, or Plum trees.<br />
<br />
I found this product: <a href="http://www.sceneryexpress.com/JAPANESE-CHERRY-LEAF-PETALS-16OZ-SHAKER/productinfo/653-6542/" target="_blank">http://www.sceneryexpress.com/JAPANESE-CHERRY-LEAF-PETALS-16OZ-SHAKER/productinfo/653-6542/</a> and shortly after found this review by TerranScapes...but as you can see, it still doesnt really give a good example of how to make these trees (yet?). Skip to 2:16 for the review...or follow the link he adds in the upper right hand corner as the video starts.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen="" class="YOUTUBE-iframe-video" data-thumbnail-src="https://i.ytimg.com/vi/Ik7K1bgT7_0/0.jpg" frameborder="0" height="266" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/Ik7K1bgT7_0?feature=player_embedded" width="320"></iframe></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
I'm still at a bit of a loss on how to do this, even though I have this neat product - because it doesnt seem thick enough to make trees with in my usual way.<br />
<br />
More research is needed. I'm wondering if anyone has experience with this product?<br />
<br />
NOTE: I found a new item in Catalogue #17, called "Pull Apart Plant Cluster" (an example is <a href="http://www.sceneryexpress.com/PULL-APART-PLANT-CLUSTERS-CHERRY-BLOSSOM/productinfo/CA0140/" target="_blank">here</a>):<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.sceneryexpress.com/images/CA0140-2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://www.sceneryexpress.com/images/CA0140-2.jpg" height="188" width="320" /></a></div>
It looks to be an undercoating, if you will, in the vein of the <a href="http://www.sceneryexpress.com/GREEN-POLYFIBER/productinfo/WD0178/" target="_blank">Polyfiber</a> product. I may look into this.<br />
